Open Hand

Open Hand is a sculpture that captures the human element. A common denominator for all people, our hand allows us to communicate, touch, play music, and build engineering masterpieces.  It’s a marvel of engineering in its complexity and functionality.  An open hand is the universally-understood sign for “welcome”, whether with a hand shake or a simple wave to say “Hello” or “Good-bye.” This piece inspires curiosity and feelings of connectedness, community, and acceptance.  The bottom of this piece is constructed to replicate a broken Roman column, and the hammered “rivet” mounting bolts likewise recall antiquity.

This sculpture symbolizes an under-represent population in public art: people of color.

Juried into the 30th Annual NC Botanical Gardens “Sculpture in the Gardens” Exhibit and award-winner at 34th Annual Lenoir Sculpture Exhibition.
